Do you make these mistakes? ❌❌❌ Here’s why you should stop: 👉 Not having enough speaking time: Fluency is all about speaking. And if you want to get better at something, you have to do JUST THAT. Speaking will build your confidence, allow you to retrieve words more quickly, increase your vocabulary, give you a chance to implement what you learn (and remember it), and help your overall flow. 👉Not working on your mindset: Your attitude toward English and your learning experience, and how you feel and think about yourself when you speak English are VITAL for your success. Ignoring that part is pretty much like putting cooking oil in your car’s gas tank and wondering why it’s not functioning. Mindset is everything, and it’s not something you're born with, it’s something you work on. 👉Trying to be perfect: Perfectionism is the killer of fluency. When you speak a second language you are bound to make mistakes. Feeling crappy about mistakes will prevent you from speaking freely, trying new things like new words, grammar forms, sounds and more. You’ll feel like you’re ‘on hold’, waiting to get better, and in the meantime not saying, doing, or getting what you want. 👉Focusing too much and reading and writing: This goes back to point #1. But also, when you get really good at reading and writing, it creates a bigger gap between the English that you know and the English that you are able to speak. That might feel inhibiting, and foster the feeling of not being good enough. Also, without speaking, you become too attached to the written word, and since spelling and pronunciation are not aligned in English, this could create pronunciation challenges. 👉 Not practicing with non-native speakers: There’s a misconception that you shouldn’t speak to non-native speakers, otherwise you’ll ‘catch’ their accent and mistakes. SO WRONG! First, how many of you are fully exposed to native speakers (TV, real life) yet you still make mistakes? Just like you can’t ‘catch’ their correct grammar and pronunciation, you can’t ‘catch’ other people’s grammar and pronunciation. Second, oftentimes, people feel more insecure around natives. This fear prevents them from speaking freely and stops their progress. On the contrary, speaking with fellow non-natives allows you more freedom and permission, which helps you increase your fluency! 👉Watching too many YouTube videos: This is the illusion of learning! You feel like you’re doing something for your English, but without spending at least 3X time on implementing what you learn, you’ll feel overwhelmed, what you learn will quickly be forgotten, and you’ll feel like you can’t seem to improve. 👉 Trying to sound like a native: Now, this may sound strange from someone who actually worked on sounding like a native for a decade! But I can tell you this: in retrospect, working so hard to speak like a native has caused me a lot of confidence issues. I felt like an impostor and was afraid of criticism and mistakes. I didn’t show up fully like myself. Not to mention all the time spent getting there! It took me a long time to learn how to let go of all of that baggage. Furthermore, working with students, I’ve noticed that when the focus was just on losing their non-native accent - it was very hard for them to gain the feeling of freedom and authenticity that they so longed for. They turned into perfectionists and focused on the nuances of speech instead of their inner expression. Instead, I now focus on teaching pronunciation to gain clarity, effortlessness, and self-expression, and the results are speaking for themselves. So… Tell me. Which one of these mistakes do you make? Please only learn it if you like it and if you are interested in learning it. I do not believe there is one “correct” accent or manner of pronunciation and I fully encourage EFL/ESL learners to expose themselves to as many varieties of English around the world to become accustomed to the beautiful variations of this world language. I focus mostly on teaching “Modern RP” (I may just say “RP” in my older videos, but to clarify, I do specifically mean “Modern RP”), however, you will hear a lovely little Yorkshire twang to my accent from time to time too. Please LOVE and BE PROUD of your accent. After all, it is part of your identity and makes you unique. 💚

Veteran teachers Larry Ferlazzo and Katie Hull Synieski offer tips on differentiating instruction for English-language learners. By using techniques such as pairing up students and enhancing background knowledge, teachers can make a lesson accessible to every student in the class, regardless of language proficiency. “Not everybody will get the same exact text or use the same strategy,” Hull Sypnieski explains, “but it’s fair because you’re meeting every student where they are.”
