I've been wanting to start my own Plex server for quite some time, but it seemed a bit confusing on what to use. Some people use a NAS device, some use a Raspberry Pi, old laptop, etc. I love building computers, so I figured my best option would be to just build a Windows machine to run Plex. I've now had the server set up for a couple months, and haven't had a single issue. Its averaging about 2-3 streams at a time and it doesn't even phase it.

In this video, I show you how to migrate a Plex Server, including all libraries and metadata, from one PC to another with a higher passmark. While this video is applicable to any Windows-to-Windows transfer of a Plex Server, I am going from Windows Server 2012 R2 to Windows Server 2016. Please note that I make an assumption in my video that the username on the old machine is the same as the username on the new one. If they are different, you will need to make a change in the imported registry setting for \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server\LocalAppDataPath, changing the path to reflect the new username. Thanks to Reuben Tarran. Update: this may not be required anymore, but I will need to verify with others. ► Note: at the 2:15 mark, go ahead and launch the server. That will create the LOCALAPPDATA folder that you need later on in the video. You can then exit the server (right-click on the Plex icon in bottom right corner, and click exit).Thanks to rblnr. ► Note: after you migrate your server, you may want to re-check the "Empty trash automatically after every scan" checkbox, as seen at the 2:37 mark. It has been awhile since I have made a video on media servers and boy has this space changed. I no longer use any of the media servers I previously made videos on and my personal setup along with the devices I use has changed quite a bit. That combined with the fact that this was also one of the most requested topics from YouTube, I figured it was time to make an updated video. In this video I show how to set up a basic Media server using a Windows 10 vm with 4 vCPUs and 4GB RAM, using Plex to handle the media server portion. I take you through the basic installation, configuration and a demo using a Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and a Sony Playstation 4 over wifi. 🤍
