If you want to take your audio to the next level, then a preamp is one of the most important things you can add to your kit! After owning the most popular modern choice for some time, we came across many problems using it. And what sprung to mind was this gem from the early 2010's that was on every video makers essentials list...until it was discontinued! The preamp is the Juicedlink RA222 and we had to get one to see how well it would hold up against the modern imitations! JuicedLink Little DARling: Sort of Like Wireless But Cheaper

Wireless lavalier kits are expensive. And they are sometimes finicky. They drop the audio when the transmitter is too far from the receiver. RF interference can cause problems as well. Wireless has its place, for sure, but sometimes you also need a backup. Or perhaps you don’t have the budget for a wireless system just yet. This is where the JuicedLink Little DARling comes in. It is a tiny little audio recorder which looks very much like a wireless lavalier microphone transmitter body pack. But instead, it records the audio from the lavalier microphone. Then when you’re done shooting, you sync the audio recorded by the DARling to your video clip in your video editing app. This entire episode was recorded with the Little DARling and a Sanken COS-11D lavalier microphone hidden under my shirt collar. For this review, B&H lent me the JuicedLink Little DARling DAR123. JuicedLink Riggy Micro RM333 - Review

JuicedLink Riggy Micro RM333 Review Here is my review of the JuicedLink Riggy Micro RM333 designed primarily for use with todays HDDSLRs. So, here are the things that I think are really cool and unique about the Riggy-Micro RM333: - So small and light, since it rips out the stuff that you don't need anymore (meters, AGC Disable, headphones) with the new 5DMKIII/D800, since they now have everything you need for quality audio (manual control, meters visible while recording, headphones). - Super long battery life, since you don't need to power the meter or headphones. Features to extend battery life, such as selective power down (when not using all the XLR inputs) and finer granularity in the low battery indicator with the Alkaline/LithiumPolymer threshold switch. - For the press videojournalist, the Riggy-Micro really helps lighten your load with a small/light preamp and you won't need to carry more spare batteries than necessary. - Camera overload protection with Audio Output Bracketing Add the RB401 (optional mount) when mounted to the bottom of your camera to attach mics and wireless receivers. So small and light, it can mount to the top of your camera on the hot shoe. Use the RB200 kit, and add cold-shoe mounts to the preamp to add mics or wireless receivers while the preamp is mounted in the hot shoe. Now, with the preamp off the bottom of the camera, you can actually cradle the DSLR for run-n-gun like a traditional DSLR, in the palm of your left hand with your fingers manipulating the focus/zoom of the lens. A single 9v Alkaline battery will run the device for 12 hours, a rechargeable battery about 18hours. More details on the Riggy-Micro RM333 here: juicedlink.com/audio-preamps-mixers-etc-c-66/rm333-riggy-micro Here are some important things to remember. First, you can't eliminate noise from electronic recording equipment (cameras, recorders, etc). The name of the game is to optimize the signal-to-noise. To do that, you want to use the principle of 'noise figure of cascaded amplifiers', and throttle the noisy gain back in the camera, and replace the noisy gain with clean gain from the juicedLink low-noise preamp. If you are you using the 5DMKIII, 5DMKII, 60D etc. you'll want to throttle the gain back in the camera to 1 click above off. Regarding the 5DMKIII, people don't understand that you can turn up the headphone volume in the camera. When the 5DMKIII and D800 first came out, Robert from JuicedLink compared their firmware for audio. This video (somewhere) will show you how to adjust the headphone vol: juicedlink.com/blog/2012/04/5dmkiii-versus-d800/ There are more tips in the User Manual you can find it online here: juicedlink.com/riggy-micro-user-manual/chapter/0 As a point of reference for what you can achieve in terms of signal-to-noise, here's a link to two MP3 files: juicedlink.com/downloaddata/RiggyAssist/ The first takes a NTG2 directly into a H4n (boomed 1.5ft away). To get enough signal into the H4n, the H4n gain is at 100%. The second takes a NTG2 into a Riggy-Assist RA333 into a 60D (gain 1 click above off), and the Riggy-Micro RM333 5DMKIII combo will be identical. The purpose of these clips is to compare the signal-to-noise that you can achieve (ignore the room echo, etc). At worse, they are comparable. The juicedLink/60D combo can generate a better signal, yielding better signal in the signal-to-noise performance. I did this comparison because I too often hear people saying that you need to record to an external recorder like the H4n to get quality audio. This is not true. The juicedLink allows you to record high quality audio directly to the camera. Plus, you'll save time not having to sync in post, you'll get something much smaller/lighter and longer battery life (with the Riggy-Micro), camera overload protection with Audio Output Bracketing, and you can quickly set levels with the Riggy front panel pots (rather than fumbling through the menu system of the H4n). So, you should be able to replicate the signal-to-noise performance in the clips. The 'noise figure of cascaded amplifiers' principle means that a low-noise preamp can fix noisy amps downstream, but you can't fix poor signal-to-noise upstream. So, you can't fix noisy mics, or poorly placed mics Video By Newsshooter.com

juicedlink Riggy Micro RM222 - best field mixer EVER!

If you want a tiny mixer that's well made in the USA look no further than the juicedlink Riggy Micro RM222. The rugged, tiny, powerhouse has all the features we need in the field yet is still so easy to use I could master it in two minutes. That is saying something! Settings are easy to configure for either phantom powered condenser microphones or dynamic mics like the Shure SM57 & SM58. My tests show you can get great audio recorded direct into a Sony A7 camera or other similar cameras with audio level controls. juicedlink has other models for DSLRs without mic input controls. 03:26 Test one using mixer 04:28 Test two straight into the camera no mixer 05:04 Test three using phantom power with a condenser mic So, remember, the best mixer is the one you have with you and this well-made RM222 is so small and light weight there is no reason not to have it handy. Product links: 🤍 9 volt rechargeable batteries: 🤍 coiled 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable: 🤍 Mogami custom 8' cable details (used without mixer - direct into camera): 🤍 Special Note: In the testing when using the juicedlink I had the Sony A7r mic level set to one notch above off. When going straight into the camera with the custom Mogami cable I had the level at 20. To me both sounded good. It's important to note there is not much electrical interference where I did the testing. In the field having the mixer is a bigger factor because the balanced XRL connections at the mic and the mixer can do their magic getting rid of noise picked up be the cable acting like an antenna. Also, using the mixer allows us to use two mics if the situation requires it.

🤍 There are many new audio devices being released for DSLR film makers. One of the latest is the Juicedlink DS214. The DS214 is considered the part of Juicedlink's Value line. At about a quarter of the price of Juicedlink's flagship model, the DT454, you can pick the DS214 up for about $144 on amazon or B&H. 🤍 As far as audio quality goes, juicedlink products are top notch. The only real complaint I have is the design. The 1/4 20 hole is in a rather awkward location, and the included audio cable is very short. I used my makerbot to build an adapter that makes the mounting a lot easier. You can find out more about that here: 🤍 Over all, I think the Juicedlink DS214 is a handy tool. If you shoot with DSLR or mirrorless cameras and you want to connect multiple lavalier or XLR microphones, an audio adapter may be a good option for you. But can you really produce high quality audio with one of these adapters? Let’s have a listen to three adapters and see: The JuicedLink Riggy Assist 222, the beachtek DXA-Micro Pro, and the Saramonic SR-PAX2. The audio for this episode was recorded entirely with these adapters (noted for each clip) along with a decent to good quality condenser microphone (RODE NTG2 and Audio Technica AT4053b). So that you can evaluate the sound quality from each of these adapters, we did not do any processing of the audio clips aside from loudness normalizing each clip to -23 LUFS, the European broadcast standard for TV loudness. No EQ, no compression, no de-noising, etc. Full disclosure: For this comparison, B&H lent me the JuicedLink RA222, beachtek gave me the beachtek DXA-Micro Pro, and Saramonic gave me the Saramonic SR-PAX2. The juicedLink Little Darling is a portable audio recorder that is more geared for lav mics but packs enough plug in power to operate some shotgun mice as long as you have a module attached and also a 3.5mm connector. The juicedLink Little Darling comes in 2 different types. The first 1 is a standard recorder while the 2nd variation features something called Darlink. This allows the Little Darling to receive a signal via a small remote to start/stop recordings and send a slate to a 2nd Little Darling that is connected to your camera for matching your audio in post. The best thing is multiple DARs can be setup to be triggered by a single remote so the versatility of the Little Darling setup is amazing. juicedLink Official Website: 🤍 Purchase Standard Little Darling HERE: 🤍 * Help support my channel by using the links below! Here's my video about this slider: 🤍 I wanted to use this JuicedLink DIY Slider I have for an upcoming TV ad shoot, so I pulled it out for some testing, now that I actually have a camera light enough for it. I'm using the GH4 at 4k, and the footage is edited in a 1080p timeline. My moves were a little bumpy, so I stabilized in FCPx. The song is an original from a 16 year old 4-Track cassette (remember those?). It's called "My Time". I just needed something to put under the shots.

Just to clarify, the mic is mounted on the camera in my echo-y kitchen and I'm a few feet away from it, so it's not about sounding 'good' in any proper way, but about comparing which setup sounds better. The Juicedlink performed much better, having better sound than the Tascam when used with the shotgun, and offering a lot more gain for dynamic mics. I wanted to test the quality of the audio from the Sennheiser G3 series with Rode Lavalier into the 5D3 with no interface. Now that the 5D3 has an audio out feature, you could potentially bypass any interface. But is the quality up to snuff? This test compares direct to camera versus using the JuicedLink Riggy. No attempt has been made in post to equalize the audio. The sound is direct from camera to create as equal a comparison as possible.

I was looking for a solution to get good quality audio into my Canon 5D3. I've gotten tired of having to sync in post, especially with deadlines. For this reason I had purchased a Panasonic AF100. However, after the 5D3 came out I wanted to move back to DSLR's, but getting good quality audio was an issue. Then I discovered JuicedLink. However, the only tests I found were with the 5D2. So here is a test comparing the direct to camera audio and audio being fed from the JuicedLink pre-amp. The test was done with a Rode NTG-2 microphone, which accepts a AA battery if no phantom power is available. I did not make any attempt to equalize the audio levels. These are straight from the camera with absolutely no post done to the audio.
