Active Directory Recycle Bin feature is a Long-Awaited to recover accidentally deleted Active Directory objects without restoring Active Directory data from backups, restarting Active Directory Domain Service (AD DS), or rebooting domain controller from Microsoft, which was introduced in Windows Server 2008 R2. Active Directory objects are preserved in the recycle bin for an amount of time to match the tombstone lifetime of the forest. This is 180 days by default. But in practice it is less impressive because to enable this feature we have to use Windows Power Shell and the Ldp.exe LDAP utility, which is not common for all levels of Windows Administrators.

How to enable AD Recycle Bin and restore deleted objects on Windows Server 2016 Before we dive into how to enable Active Directory Recycle Bin in Windows Server 2016, we will first explain what it is and when Microsoft introduced this feature. Active Directory Recycle Bin simply allows you to restore deleted objects from Active Directory. It can be a user account, computer account or a whole Organizational Unit (OU). Who did not accidentally delete an AD object in his career? Without this feature enabled, you had only a few choices. Either you could restore if you used a backup solution allowing you to restore individual AD objects (many virtualization backup vendors do that nowadays). Or you have had less chance and your AD server wasn’t configured to be backed up and you have to recreate the user and reinstall his profile on his computer. Active Directory Recycle Bin in Windows Server 2016 (like in 2012R2) makes it very easy, but this feature is not enabled by default. You need to enable it manually. If you don’t, you can’t rely on it for accidental deletions of an object within your Active Directory (AD).

Windows Server 2008 R2 introduced the Active Directory recycle bin as a way to fully undelete objects and replace the Active Directory tombstone reanimation feature. However in Windows Server 2008 R2 it required the use of PowerShell commands to be able to first enable the recycle bin (Enable-ADOptionalFeature) and the to be able to recover objects (Restore-ADObject), or use tools like LDP.EXE. However with Windows Server 2012 there is not a new UI for managing the Active Directory Recycle Bin. The UI components are housed with the updated Active Directory Administrative Center (ADAC).
