Please click *Subscribe* - new rare photobooks added every few days, don't miss out! At the beginning of the 1995 football season, Hans van der Meer set out to take a series of football photographs that avoided the cliched traditions of modern sports photography. In an attempt to record the game in its original form - a field, two goals and 22 players - he sought matches at the bottom end of the amateur leagues, the opposite end of the scale to the Champions' League. And he avoided the enclosed environment of the stadium and tight telescopic details and hyperbole of action photography. His European odyssey has since taken him from small towns in the remote regions of Europe - from Bihariain in Romania to Bjorko in Sweden, from Torp in Norway to Alcsoors in Hungary, from Bartkowo in Poland to Beire in Portugal - and to the fringes of the major conurbations of Greece, Finland, England, France, Germany, Scotland, Switzerland, Holland, Slovakia, Denmark, Ireland, Wales, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Spain and Italy.

Beside the drystone wall of a Victorian cemetery in Yorkshire, a group of amateur footballers in blue and black are putting up goalposts. They drape nets awkwardly across top beams, jiggle the uprights into position, laugh. In the absence of anything as new-fangled as a changing room with toilets, a player pees against the stoic ancient wall, which doesn’t seem to mind. A teammate moves slowly at the edge of the frame, spreading wood shavings to mark the touchline. Just out of shot is a stone house where Patrick Brontë, choleric father of the novel-writing sisters Charlotte, Emily and Anne, used to live. In the midwinter of 2004-5, the celebrated Dutch photographer Hans van der Meer came here to Warley and ten other locations around this most distinctive bit of northern England to record scenes of non-professional football. The resulting film takes us to a world far from familiar TV coverage of the sport. Instead of sleek and skilful athletes, frenzied crowds and even the results of matches, Van der Meer shows us something unexpected, and more interesting: human foibles and fellowship, football as part of the rhythm of the seasons. The backgrounds are at least as important as the game. Seagulls wheel over municipal playing fields in Bradford’s Peel Park, named for the man who created Britain’s first police force. Beyond, we glimpse markers of the city’s past and present: the Valley Parade stadium where a fire killed 56 fans twenty years earlier; the vast Lister Mill, once the biggest silk factory in the world, dominating a hilltop; the beautiful green dome of the Jamia Masjid Hanfia mosque. On a pitch beside a factory that proudly declares itself to be Britain’s largest manufacturer of clogs, a goalkeeper uncomplainingly shakes away the wet mud into which he flung himself when he failed to make a save. The game, in other words, becomes a symphony of vignettes and sounds. Old men with yapping dogs look on from the sideline. The shouts of players merge and transmute into a song of life. Portly defenders and attackers chug gently back and forth across the field like waves on a beach. David Winner David Winner is an English author and journalist. His best-known books are Those Feet: An Intimate History of English Football (2005), and Brilliant Orange: The Neurotic Genius of Dutch Football (2000). How will we, the consumer, shape the future of food production and what will be the role of animals in it? The talk is presented in the context of van der Meer’s project 'Time to Change', which looks at the changing and progressive world of the Dutch dairy cow and is presented in the festival’s main exhibition Bite the Hand that Feeds You. Van der Meer is joined by investigative journalist Niall Sargent who brings the topic into the Irish context and will additionally talk about unsustainable farming practices and the systems that support them. About the Speakers Hans van der Meer is a documentary photographer. Through photography, film and writing Van der Meer examines the world around him. Hans van der Meer - Minor Mysteries

Inspired by legendary street photographers Hans van der Meer took off to Budapest in the fall of 1984 and stayed, with interruptions, for a year. Minor Mysteries provides insight into what fascinated Van der Meer as a young, curious outsider in a country that at first sight seemed alienating and distant, but where he quickly found his way. Without a preconceived plan, he let his intuition guide him, wandering the streets like a director collecting scenes for a script. This is how he stumbled upon wonderous, playful, at times tragicomic situations. In retrospect, the series is like a monument to an era in transition. An era that was nearing its end, in a city in the heart of Europe, that looked battered under the weight of history, but with hope for something new.

HANS VAN DER MEER EUROPEJSKIE BOISKA. KRAJOBRAZ NIŻSZYCH LIG FUTBOLU // European Fields - The Landscape of Lower League Football Centrum Sztuki Współczesnej Łaźnia / Centre for Contemporary Arts "Laznia" 16.06-15.07.2012 Projekt Hansa Van der Meera to dokumentacja starć amatorskich drużyn piłkarskich (w tym również polskich). Z jednej strony fotografie nawiązują formą do tradycji holenderskiego malarstwa krajobrazowego, z drugiej przywołują relacje z meczy z początków ubiegłego wieku. Wystawa zrealizowana dzięki wsparciu Ambasady Królestwa Niderlandów w Warszawie. // The project of Hans van der Meer is a documentation of matches of amateur football teams (including Polish). The work, though done today, recalls the origins of football. The series of photographs show the pitches at the foot of mountains, next to factories and churches, on suburbs and sea shores. Matches take place without cameras, almost without the audience. On the one hand, the photography refers in its form to the tradition of Dutch landscape painting, on the other, it evokes relations from matches from the beginning of the last century. The exhibition is realised with a support from the Netherlands Embassy in Warsaw.

Hans van der Meer (Leimuiden, NL, 1955) lives and works in Amsterdam. Selected for On the Move: the photobook The Netherlands off the shelf (2012). ABOUT THE NETHERLANDS OFF THE SHELF A parking space with a parking meter, a covered row of shopping carts, a shopping mall and a group of containers for recycling paper and glass; a city scene so common in the Netherlands that it goes unremarked. Photographer Hans van der Meer visited towns throughout the Netherlands, recording scenes typical of contemporary life. Shot with great objectivity from the vantage point of his stepladder, Van der Meer focused on space and details. The places themselves are anonymous; the book consists of spreads accompanied only by a number. The street furniture we see – from the street lighting, grilles and fences, to benches, signs and so on – is chosen from international mail order catalogs. But the result is unmistakably Dutch. Architects, local councilors and project developers all clearly share the same collective, national instincts when it comes to redesigning Dutch streets. Evidently, the Netherlands can be ordered right off the shelf, judging from the catalogue in Van der Meer’s book, a subtle conceptual intervention. At the back of the book is an index of pictures accompanied by texts written by the photographer. With the same objectivity as his images, the photographer is precise, never cynical – he observes but never judges.

No amateur football, no professional football, no Champions League, no UEFA Euro 2020, no champions this year. For over a century, football has brought people together. Now, ‘the most important side issue in life’ has come to a grinding halt. 'European Fields' by Hans van der Meer, a project including a book and a travelling exhibition, shows the primal form of the game: twenty-two players on a pitch, no matter their talent, no matter where. Passionately playing together, in a setting far away from the Champions League. His observations of life at the bottom of the football pyramid show not only how football is part of the landscape, but also how deeply the game and its rituals are rooted in human culture. With mild irony, Van der Meer demonstrates the mismatch between human ambition and the effective result, between an individual’s ‘inside’ perception and a more objective, distanced view of our behaviour. Amateur football as the perfect metaphor for life at large. The 'European Fields' exhibition contained a number of video observations as well as photographic football landscapes. These were shot across Europe: from Belgium to the UK, Portugal, France and Italy. As part of the cultural programme surrounding Euro 2000, the first one 'Vlaamse Velden' ('Flemish Fields'), dates back to exactly 20 years ago. In these days of social distancing, Paradox and partners, ranging from the world of football as well as the arts, wish to share these short movies with you. We will be launching five ‘matches of the week’ on consecutive weekends, starting May 9 on our YouTube Channel. Spread the word and enjoy them while staying safely at home!
